Do I need a new Gearbox???
« on: 23 January 2010, 17:51 »
Hi all.....Again!

After a new clutch, new fuel pump and filter, new blower motor and resistor, I think my bloody gearbox has given up now but wanna check with you guys before I buy replacement.

Not really gettin into 1st at all now, (smelt new clutch burnin a bit ) 2nd been v stiff since I got the car but 3rd, 4th and 5th are fine. There's also loasda play in gearstick in all gears. No funny noises though.

Any ideas? Oh it's a 94 8v GTI.

Cheers in advance.

Hey there,

The clutch smell is prob just the bedding in period, is it still smelling after some miles?
the problem your having with 1st and 2nd could be that whoever fitted your clutch has neglected to
properly re-align the gear linkage..

with 3rd, 4th and 5th ok but 1st and 2nd playing up it sounds like the linkage is of-set too far one way..

might be worth taking your car back, explain your gear selection probs and ask them to check the gear linkage alignment..

hope this helps :@)

sounds like the linkages are worn.......there's a guide in the mk2 maintenance section about replacing the various ball joints, rubber bushes in the linkages.

Very True
his could also be the cause,

Was the gear selection ok before you had the clutch fitted????

if it was ok before the new clutch fitting then i would suggest having your mechanic recheck the linkage alignment as thats most likely the prob

if however you also had this problem before your new clutch was fitted then i would do as boneybradley suggests and have the linkage checked for wear...

Thanks for your advice guys - will defo check out the mk 2 section re linkage. :smiley:and speak to guy who fitted the clutch.

Problems with 1st only since clutch was fitted but 2nd always been really stiff to get into. Makes me mad!!! althogh happy to hear it's not defo gear box.

Doubt it's related but car also judders, not so when accelerating hard but when I take accelerator off, have done a search and ill be looking to clean out throttle body and see if that does the trick as apparently this is quite an easy job. :undecided:lol
