gearbox differences

high trying to buy a replacement gear box and one on ebay is going at the moment, the guy says it has black painted end casing, is this the box from a gti 16v?

It means nothing to be honest.
You need to know what dose yours is - 3 letters stamped on it - and know what will fit.

Assuming you want an 02A as you mention 16v...then this is very different to a 02O from an 8v.
Then there are 02A hydraulic clutch and 02A cable clutch gearboxes...they aren't immediately interchangable.
And 02A 4 cylinder and 02A 6 cylinder gearboxes...and they aren't interchangable either.

Even if you get the correct type...the gear ratios and final drive ratio may be all wrong for your engine.

Mk3 16v should be CDA or DPA code.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
