Newbie owner of 1.8T has electrical questions

Hi All,

Picked up my W Reg GTI 1.8T yesterday, and since I have had a proper day to play with it, I have noticed a couple of things that dont seem to work that I didn't see when I first looked at it. I know absolutley nothing about car maintenance, so these questions might be really stupid.

1. The Rear demister does not work. The light comes on when I press it, but it does not demist at all. What should be the first thing that i should check? I know what you are going to say.......fuses.... Where are the fuses kept?

2. heated seats, as I can tell don't work either.

3. When I unlock the car, boot does not open. Is this correct? I then put the key in and have to turn it left or right to open.

4. When I lock the car by either pressing the lock button on theinside  drivers door, or by  the key fob, all the pins go down, but the the passengers door one pops back up again. I have to press it multiple times to get it to stay down. is this faulty or a "feature"?

A non electrical question now, but how can I tell if the car has been "De Locked"

the poping of the door pins indicated faulty module... but it will still lock.. just keep pressing the lock button until the car flashes once that indicates it is locked and the alarm is activated.. which is what i do... sometimes happens with one press of the button but mostly takes about 2-3 presses for the whole car propely lock..common problem by sounds of it.. as my mates golf does same thing.. never bothered me tho iv kinda got used to it 

you can tell you car is "de-locked" if you have no key holes on the doors.. sometime the keyhole is beneath the plastic cover next to the handle so have a peep there too  .. this is done if the person buying car from new asked for it for extra secuirty  ..

 my mk4 is de-locked.. big problem if your central locking goes tho.. as you will have to enter the car through the boot!

Hi mate ill ans best i can but someone will correct me if im wrong lol

1. Fuse box is on drivers side, there is a panel on side of the dash

2. Again could be fuse

3.if press unlock once on key fob it open drivers door but if you press twice it will open all door/boot

4.i have the same problem with my rear passenges door so like nav says it more the likely the door module and its def not a feature but i live with mine untill it breaks

open your drivers door and where it shuts against the dash that is the fuse box!!

Heated seat could be the switch or relay, same for the demister, heated seats failing i belive is common, my tdi did within 6 months of getting it new.

Point 4, mine is like this using the lock button on drivers door.

Press it once, both locks go down then back up.

Press it really quickly twice, providing both door pins are in the up position, they'll go down, make a racket but stay down.

My passenger door pool light doesn't come on, the interior lights don't light from the passenger door and if you unlock the car and go in via the passenger door it locks again in 30 seconds as it can't tell a doors been opened so am assuming the pass door module is fubar'd

Hi Guys,

Thanks very much for all your replies. I have checked with a Multimeter the fuses on the golf, and they all seem to work apart for the one for the headlight washers, which now has been replaced and works. My main problem that i want to get fixed is the rear demister. If the fuse seems to work, and the light on the button comes on once pressed, what should be my next test?

Also passenger door lock seems to have fixed itself for the moment. This issue could be the bad soldering that I have read about couldnt it? If so, that will be a weekend job to fix it....
