I'd start by cleaning out the throttle body and the rubber pipes and hoses being careful not to break or rip them.
After that I'd unplug the MAF and take it for a spin, if it cures it then the MAF is the culprit and needs replacing.
If that doesn't cure it still I'd look at coolant temp sensor.
If that doesn't cure it I'd try replacing the fuel pump and the ECU relays. They are notorious for playing up.
If that still doesn't cure it I'd look at the lambda sensor, because it is only 12 months old it doesn't mean it's not faulty.

Good luck

Hello Gents
Having similar problems with my 1996 16V GTI, car will not idle at all until it gets to running temp, once at temperature its ok, also strong smell of petrol and excessive fuel usage, put £20 in the tank travelled about 30 miles and had to put more in.
Also there’s no mileage, time display when the ignition is turned off, the two LED screen go blank, no interior lights. Stereo or cig lighter. More concerned about the smell of fumes in the car, Cars not been used for a couple of years, but cant afford to be spending loads on it as it cost £600 to get to this stage
Any help would be great.

I'm not really confident enough to take out any bits from the engine for cleaning...I've heard there are some liquids that you pour into the fuel tank, and when the engine is running it will kind of go through everything and clean it up?

the two displays are meant to go blank with the ignition off.  interior lights etc- have you checked the fuses?
