Mk1 - replacing 1.6 with 1.8
« on: 18 January 2010, 09:59 »
I've decided to drop a new motor into my 1982 Mk1 Golf GTI 1.6.  There don't seem to be many 1.6 engines out there but plenty of 1.8 engines, including with gearboxes, which will fit of course.  My question is - how easy a switch is this and what extra work on electrics etc will be needed?

I'd prefer to stick with a 1.6 though so if anyone does know of a decent 1.6 GTI engine then I'm interested.  Need to do something sharpish so all help welcome!

direct swap, leave all the injection/electrics exactly as they are and it will work just fine. 1.8 owners like to fit 1.6 metering head as an upgrade anyway ;)

dont even have to swap the gearbox, the old one will work great. just fit a 210mm 1.8 8v clutch kit while its out, just you have to swap the flywheel for a 210mm one. If you're lucky the replacement lump will have a flywheel anyway :)

apparently it can flow more fuel, not really clued up.  on the mk1 owners club a guy called paul posted up a massive thread comparing the 8v 1.6 and 1.8 metering heads :)

You will need the 1.8 top hose as it is different to the 1.6.

I have a 'tweaked' 1600 EG coded engine, with all the gubbings coming up for grabs as soon as you'd like it.  It has done about 12-15'000 since a total re-build with all new bits and less than 3000 since I replaced the valves, due to a slight issue on gear selection... ahem.
It is still in the car, so can be 'test' driven if needed.

And a 1.9 TSR lump.  (huge stomp)

If you're interested, give me a bell on 07766 454644

Cheers

Mark
