New mk3 plenty of questions
« on: 02 January 2010, 16:36 »
Hi all. Just picked up an auto 2.L 8v estate

When pushing it a bit the gearbox or whatever gives out a squeal then is ok.
In park it revs at about 1200? In drive with brakes on its at 1000?
The dash mileometer display only lights up the miles and time but nothing else
The passenger window does go up or down
The drivers side won't lock from that side, guess its the linkage as heard from others on other threads, when closing the doors(locking from passenger side) I can hear a whining noise from the back like poss the fuel pump? or is the central locking pump there?

Any answers appreciated

Gary

Hi Gary

The dash lighting can be solved by removing the clock cluster. There is a blank to the bottom left hand corner of the clock surrond. Remove this with a flat head screwdriver and remove the screw behind it. Do the same with the blank to the right hand side next to the light switch and remove the screw under there. The clock surround will then pull out (carefully). When removed there are two screws holding the clocks in. One to the left and one to the right. There is also a connector in the back of the clocks. Once this is removed the clocks will come out although you may need to lower the steering wheel to do all this!!  Once the clocks are out the bulbs can be seen at the rear of the cluster.
The passenger window issue could be the motor. Can you hear any noise when pressing the button?? If not then it will be the motor....cheap enough to buy second hand. If you can hear the motor when pressing the button then remove the door card and check the mechanism when attempting the button. Could be the wire snapped??
The central locking issue will more than likely be the air pipe to the door. If the central locking pump was knackered the other doors would not open. The pump is in the boot and the pipes run down to the doors. I changed my door recently and broke the pipe. The easiest way to check is to unscrew the large connector from the door to the car. There will be wires in the loom for the electrics but there will also be a large air pipe in there. With the connector off lock the central locking and you will hear if the air is getting through. If it is try reconnecting the pipe and connector and see if this helps.

Cheers     Deano

Sounds like the gearbox is slipping.
