Pinking when car is warm.
« on: 22 December 2009, 00:10 »
hi people,

when the car is upto temp and im driving up hill the car strats to make a weird "pinking" noise as i was told by a relative iv heard it myself well its not hard not to hear it, wayne was on about this few wks ago. my mate said his does the same as he has same car & engine as mine,

the car is a g3 gti 8v with AGG engine code.

iv done a search but i cant find what im looking for.

p.s i have had replaced the coil as it packed up its a bosch and has prob done about 3k on it or so  :undecided: also i am using v-power all the time i fill up. throttle body was cleaned in summer. i have super 4 bosch sparks in there, the spark leads are magnecore blue and they are over a yr old and prob have done 15k on them, rotor arm and disp cap where replaced over 15k ago.

Thanks in advance

Pinking is a sign that the ign. timing is out.

Or try changing your petrol station, some of the cheapo imported stuff in some supermarkets is rubbish.

Don't think you cn adjust the ign timing on the agg except by a tooth at the cam belt pully, but the knock sensor makes sense as it advances and retards the ign. according to load, not sure where to find it but doing a search there is reference to it being on the block, probably near the dizzy.

it's on the frount of the engine block,  if it has 1 knock sensor it's between cyls 1&2   it just bolts down with a singel bolt torqued to 20 NM

there may be another between 3&4  dont think the agg has 2 tho.

all the VW's have gone bar 1.

no - just a single knock on a AGG

Your mechanical timing (aka crank and cam and timing belt) should always be spot on.  The ignition timing, i.e. the relationship of the dizzy position to the cylinder 1 TDC should be set with the engine in "timing mode" - I think this is do-able via vag-com.  Haynes say 5-15 degree's BTDC.  Garage did mine.

the AGG actualy has a cranck position sensor whitch dose the actual ignition timeing, the dizzy is only a singel window type and just used to notify the enigne whitch revolution on the 720 cycel the engine is entering.

dizzy only has to be near if to far out it'll rev limute to 5000 rpm
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
