Wierd cooling system problem
« on: 25 December 2009, 22:16 »
Right ive got a mk2 1.6 driver and ever since I brought it its had a problem where the cooling system would only warm up propperly in traffic sat for a while. Having this before on a different car I put it down to a stuck open thermostat and changed it. This however has not fixed the problem.. the top hose to the radiator gets burning hot and steam comes out little bits from the top of it where as the bottom hose only gets a little bit warm and then when the car gets moving the bottom hose goes stone cold and the temp drops a notch below halfway and possibly lower on longer trips.

Can anyone help?

Thanks
Jamie :)

As long as your heaters hot I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Blocked radiator or air lock
Would the guage not read high if the radiator or system was blocked? and longer journeys would surely not be possible.

I was hoping it wouldnt be a blocked radiatior :( Hose pipe through it or some speed flush?

Then again I could see an airlock being viable as I only left the cap of the expansion tank to bleed it no bleed screws (if they exist on mk2s?) Thing is it had the same problem before I drained the coolant

Heaters are hot because ive done the valve bypass
