Automatic car pops out of gear

I've got a friend with an automatic gearbox (noob gearboxes lol).

Anyway, the other day, his car started popping out of gear, causing his car to bunny hop. He says it will select a gear then disengage shortly afterwards.

He suspects it may be the clutch plates but isn't sure.

Any ideas as to why this might be happening?

1st thing id do is check the oil level, and replace it if it looks nasty.  what car is it anyway?

It's an old Polo.

Oil condition is fine AFAIK, called him this morning and he says the oil is still fairly yellowish, and not gunky black.

And other thoughts?

I would still drain and flush it through as a 1st step.

Oil change done, same problems...

TBH it proably knackerd,     takeing auto boxes apart is not for those without skills, also parts are geenrally expensive and need spectial tools made of unobtanium to fit
