My 1st Track Day
« on: 26 September 2004, 22:52 »
Having spent the last few months working on my little 16v, I have to say a big thank you to everyone on these forums for the helpfull advice.

Oil leaks, dodgy gear shifts, eratic tick over and all of the other usual problems with Mk2 16v. I think the little bugger is on the way to getting sorted!

Having stripped out the original seats and replaced with something a little more in keeping with the 'race look', I took it for its first track day!

WOW! Great fun...even managed to get past a few Porche 944's.  (Non competative of course!)

I will post some pics soon, once I know how!

I would recommend track days to anyone! (I booked through Javelin Motorsport who were very friendly and ran a good event at Elvington!)

If you were at the event, the smoke you saw piling out the back of my car was not a blow up! It was the result of me keeping it in 2nd in the redline from the chicane right round until the first left hander! (I got a bit carried away!)

Enough rambling....see you at the next Elvington track day!

Its a GTi

Sounds brilliant. I would love to have a go, the only thing that worries me is that I don't want to make myself look like a t*t. ;D

To tell the truth...I was really worried. I had been to a few track days as a passenger, and ridden a few bike track days, but this was to be my first as a driver.
Having done a lot of the prep work myself, I was also worried that the car would not be up to it! :-\

I went with a group of mates, one of which was driving a TVR 350C. I probably had one of the oldest anf slowest cars at the event, but hey, it was excellent fun. At the end of the day I certainly wasnt the slowest. A few cars threw in the towell, but everyone had great fun.

I did learn a lot about the limits of my car, and my ability.

I need new front tyres, and much MUCH better suspension, having run on standard shocks and springs! (new ones, but still stock!) I have Black Diamond brakes  (drilled and grooved) which seemed to work well.

One big learning curve!

Do not stay in second gear at 7000rmp for a series of 3 turns! It causes a LOT of oil to reach the air intake and into the cylinders!  (oops) After a lap it seemed to burn off and resume normal duty!

GO FOR IT.. you will not regret it!
