Temp Gauge

The water temperature gauge reads normal (90C) when the car is stationary but drops back into the cold zone whenever the car is driven. The thermostat appears to be working ok as the water is getting through radiator etc and there is hot air from the heater even when the gauge has dropped to cold. Have changed the temp sensor and its made no difference. Temperature never goes past 90 no matter how long the car sits for and fan cuts in fine as well. Is it the gauge thats faulty and if so why does it read normal when the car isn't moving??

Mate this sounds pretty normal to me. Mine is the same and goes up to about half way when sitting idle and then when moving goes down.   Yours sounds very normal to me.     Cheers     Deano

Agree with Wayne here,  Mine used to behave similarly dropping back once on the move..I suspected the thermostat and replaced it..Now it warms up to 90% quite quickly and stays there..you'd have to say that this is how it should be really, same as others cars i've owned.

maybe try replacing the thermostat then. Other vw's i've owned over the years usually sit at the halfway mark in the temp gauge and don't really move much from that. The car does warm up quite quickly and I thought the thermostat was ok as you can feel the hot water through the bottom hoses.

Mine sits dead on half way all the time, it will be your thermosat.

Let me know if changing your thermostat worked as I thought mine was normal when doing this. If changing thermostat works I will have to change mine.     Cheers     Deano

Definately thermostat. It may be working to a fashion, but getting pretty tired. I have the same on my car. I just have not got round to swapping it out yet.

Changed the thermostat this afternoon and temp gauge is now sitting half way when driving :smiley: . Having trouble bleeding the system though as there must be an airlock as the bottom radiator hose doesn't warm up  :sad:
