Hi Folks,

Ok so it's not a Golf but I've just got meself a 1.4 TDI Polo. I'm lead to believe that this is the PD 100 (or something) engine with a 1/4 of the block chopped off and a smaller turbo.

Now the reason for this post is I have never owned a diesel or an FI car in my life and I'd just like some general tips etc on how to look after it. Stuff like warm up procedure, how often to change the oil and filter blah blah blah.

Looking forward to your replies (and probably laughter at my missing cylinder!).

always let the glow plug lights go out before starting and wait perhaps a few seconds after that to give it the best chance of firing it up first time; especially in the colder weather

Unless its been serviced recently then an oil and filter change every 10K will be fine.  I also tend to change the fuel filter although its not recommended until every 20K.  Up to you really 

As per your satan fuel driven MK2 let coolant and oil get up to temperature before giving it the beans

If you have given it some stick make sure the last 1/2 mile home is a gentle cruise to allow the hot oil to circulate.  DO NOT turn the engine straight off after giving it a good thrashing as its a sure-fire way to shorten the life-span of the 'ickle turbo

The PD engines are fialy bullet proof - regular servicing and a bit of care and attention will see them live long after their satan fuelled breathern has bit the dust

Spot on my man, thanks very much. DH gave me some oil and filter and as it has zero history I shall be changing it on the weekend. Might pick up a fuel filter as well after reading the above.

As for R-Tech it is very tempting but this is supposed to be the sensible daily so that my spare £££'s go on the track sl*t. That said a stage 1 remap might be a nice birthday present from the wife

Does anyone know what clutches these 1.4 PD's run? My big fear with getting it mapped would be to goose the clutch and find it's going to cost me a packet to replace it as that would ruin the whole purpose of it being a cheap to run car.

Yes deffo worth changing the fuel filter; if its like my engine it will be in the engine bay just south of the coolant bottle

Mine's a sensible daily too 

Is it a 5 speed box?? If so, there is a possiblity that the VR6 / G60 setup MAY fit your car which means it will easily cope with the extra power and torque of a remap.  All in i think you can pick up the flywheel and clutch for approx £200 

Has the cambelt been changed on it? If not get that sorted and do the water pump at the same time

Way ahead of ya! It's booked in for the cambelt and water pump on wednesday at my local specialist.

It is indeed a 5 speed so that sounds promising. Not sure if it's a polo specific box though. I'll have to get digging on the Polo forum and see what I can find out. Problem is it's full of kids with petrol cars so I'm not holding out much hope of finding someone on there with the knowledge.
