I have a 96 mk3 16v golf, I have a droning noise coming from the front of the car that sounds the same as when a wheel bearing has gone, I have checked all the bearings and they seem fine (no play or noise),
I got told it could be the gearbox but as the noise continues when you depress the clutch pedal it prob isnt.
Anyone have any ideas what might be the problem.

Many thanks
Rob

Wheel bearings can be noisy even if there is no play at the wheel.
I would replace that first.

check the outter sleeve which gets knocked in, i replaced mine but kept the sleeves and there was a slight crease in 1 which left me with a horrible noise

could it be overtightened?

Does the centre driveshaft nut need to be torqued to a set level, and its been over done?

Im guessing youve checked the obvious already (tyre pressures all good).

Brake sticking.

Could be. But i would of thought that would be obvious once jacked up and spinning the wheel.

Fair point, unless it is a warped disc.

A warped disc usually vibrates, a wheel bearing has a very distinct droning noise.

Have you had your rear axle bushes replaced?  because...

I had such a noise myself, couldn't tell where the hec it was coming from and i replaced the rear wheel bearings but noise still there..
In the end i thought i must have a gearbox on it's way out, funny thing was the noise would only appear when in fifth gear..
Then one day i had my rear axle bushes replaced and you know it....noise gone!

You learn..but when you think about it if any rubber mounts or bushes in the drivetrain or suspension are worn, the vehicle is suspect to creating vibration and noises through the chassis..and all exacerbated by any other problems like worn tires/pressures/mismatches/tracking etc..

This might not be your situation i know but i thought i'd mention it..
