Worth a try with the dealer - I wouldn't fancy letting myself loose at the steering wheel with a lighter either!

Had this [well not RED stitching] with a Ford RS many years back.

They replaced the steering wheel under warranty.

You must tell the garage.
VW will not let you drive with a faulty steering wheel.
