well i have just got back from the garage without my golf
went in to have the oil leak fixed and a few other odds and ends but it turns out the compression in 2 of the cyclinders is awful and the the sills need welding also!!!
honestly not sure what to do about the compression whether to try a new head gasket? get a new head? cant really afford a new engine
any ideas chaps?

New engines cost sod all mate tbh, and be less hassle than swapping a head.
If its an 8v could probably get an engine for less than £100. My mate gave one away the other day.
As for ABF 16v, £200 would get you a good one i reckon.

If it is down on compression, as Mike said it could work out cheaper to replace the engine.

If you can find someone with a cylinder leakage tester (and a compressor) These are useful in locating the cause of poor compression if it isnt obvious
