Towing weights, 91 Golf GTD?

Hi, i have searched for a long time but i cant seem to find maximum towing weights for my car. The manual is in Devon im in Bristol. Can anyone tell me what weight i could tow with the car. Basically, my friend needs to pick up a triumph scimitar, which apparently weighs in at about 1100kg. We could obviousely rent a flat bed trailer. but realisticaly does anyone know if this is going to be too much for my golf?

yeah that would be great jay, thanks. yeah i realise its a lot to ask of the little car. I do have a good gearbox that I have to put in though so its not the end of the world if there is a lot of extra wear when/if we are towing with the current one.

Can't find the towing weight in the Bentley manual    best place to ask would be vwdiesels.net, they know their stuff    I searched a bit but could find nothing definitive.
