Am looking to get a mk3 gti 16v off a mate who bought it with a snapped cam belt stripped engine down replaced all parts and re built engine back up got it running spot on pulls well and really picks up only thing is you have to press accelerater to get it to start and cuts out when ideling but runs fine when accelerater is pressed does anyone have any idea what could be causing it need to know before committing to getting it any help would be great.

Get the timing checked - that's a fairly cheap place to start! 15-20 quid to get a mechanic to check & adjust.

Personally I'd go for it - these sort of things are fairly common with the mk3 and scrap parts are  cheap. Use the problem to beat your mate mercilessly down on the price

ISV is your idle valve.
