While we're on the topic of petrol.................... what's the story on Optimax and/or BP Ultimate premium unleaded in the GTI pls?

The marketing blurb says..........."thanks to the knock control, unleaded four star (at least 95 RON) can be used instead of unleaded Super plus. In order to achieve max fuel consumption benefits on the TSI engine (the GTI engine, yes?) Ultra Low Sulphur Petrol must be used"...............

Views and recommendation please. Is the extra cost of Optimaz etc worth it or marketing money to the oligarks?

I believe the MKVI is fine to run on 95 RON, rather than higher-rated fuels. A wee search in this section might give you more info?

I can't say I use BP fuel; I have only ever used Shell V-power or Tesco's Super Unleaded, because they are both 99 RON and to be honest, I don't really notice a difference between these two fuels, but I DO notice a difference vs 95 RON fuel.

I'm not technical, but there's some great fuel debate threads in the MKV section, if you want to explore the site! :afro:

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

GTI mk6, 3dr Manual (Yes Manual! If I wanted a Taxi I'd hail one, not spend £1500 on one), Candy White, Full Leather, Xenons, ACC, 18", RCD510 + Dynaudio, DAB Radio, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Fiscon Bluetooth Plus, Golf R LED's.

In the fortnight I've had the car (GTD), I've now done ca.1700 miles, first tank, brim to initial warning light was 515miles.

That was about the norm give or take 10-15miles, until the other day when it was Revo'd ...heheheh

Very first journey after that, on a run from Dover to Reading immediately after the reflash, a run at mostly 0.85 leptons (with the obvious "testing" that needs to be done!) gave an average of 54.5mpg...couldnt believe it....with the stock map, I could just about achieve that by holding it steady at 70mph and not booting it.

Havent run a full tank through yet, but probably no worse than pre-mapping...which isnt too shoddy for +40hp/+71lbft increase.

All petrol sold in the UK is classed as ultra low sulphur, so you're okay there. The GTI's quoted 210PS power output is based on using 95 RON fuel. Whether the standard ECU mapping results in additional power when using 99 RON, I don't know. However any potential benefits to power and fuel consumption from using 99 RON fuels are likely to be small on a standard engine and are probably outweighed by the additional cost of the fuel.
