Strange problem!! sick 16v
« on: 01 September 2009, 19:12 »
Hi,

On my way home from work and the revs start jumping up and down I get to a junction the revs are irratic then the engine dies.

I tried starting it again and it turn over but won't start, then it starts but sounds like the exhaust is off, t revs up and down then cuts ou agan. It almostsounds likethe engine is exhuasting throught the airbox! I tried a couple more times then it starts and drives absolutly fine all the way home.

So I get hoe and pop the bonnet and everything looks fine the only thing I can see that looks a little strange is the top pipe off the radiator looks swollen like there is to much pressure (i did topthe water up at the weekend is it possible that this could be caused by overfilling slightly?) but I can't see how this would cause the problems I've had.

Any ideas on hat this could be? any help would be really apprecated.

Oh and the engine is a 16v kr.

Thanks

Edd

one of the lads i used to work with had erratic idle and stalling on his bmw and it was down to a split in the air intake pipe

sounds quite similar to mine when it was suffering from poor fuel pressure - it did this for a bit - kangerooing - losing power - sounding 'flat' and then the pump finally went (although it still buzzed) - sorted with a new main pump - worth changing the fuel filter though first (if it is a fuel thing) as this is cheap and blockages can cause all sorts of problems (also worth checking the in-tank fuel pump is working as well)?

Thanksfor the replys.

I replaced both fuel pumps the fuel filter and the pump housing abot 2 months ago so I' pretty sure that isn't the problem.

The car has un fine since this problem so I'm wondering if it was a blockage in the system that has cleared itself??

I'm thinking of taking apart all the air inlet pipe work and theilet manifols and givng everything agood clean, what do you think??

Bit late, but sounds like either fuel pump as suggested...

or if rev counter is going haywire when it does it, then its the Hall sender on the Dizzy.
Cheers, Tony.
