bike carbs on a AEE 1.6
« on: 01 September 2009, 23:38 »
hey i was reading on the club polo forum about putting bike carbs on a 1.6 AEE, from what ive read it would need a new manifold to be custom built and 600cc carbs. Can anyone think of anything else that would be needed or does anyone know anyone who has done this?

It is an option, however I would question if it is worth it when bigger engines could give you a lot more gain for a lot less pain.

theres a guy on the club polo forum  called mikeymk who raves about bike carbs, he built a bike carbed AEE which he fitted into a mk2 polo shell.  Talking to him, he reckoned the whole setup cost him less than £150 to do and was around the 110 bhp mark.  it had a nice bark to it, whether it had the bite to match I cant say, as he never posted any rolling road charts etc.  from what i remember he used carbs from a 600cc bike, with the jets drilled.  the inlet was a home-made affair using bits from B&Q plus some industrial hose.  the bits from the diy store were used as stubs, mounted to the head, then the hose was used to connect the carbs, to the stubs.  Looking at the install, it all looked very well put together.
however the same guy ended up ditching the AAE block in favour of an ABD as its a stronger engine and has a more revvy nature

He did have a lot of issues with breaking gearboxes though, but that could have been down to driver abuse.  Personally ive never rated the AEE block.  I had a mk4 polo with one fitted and found it utterly gutless, so can only imagine how painfull it is in a golf.

^^

The ABD is a 1.4, I've owned one, and can honestly say it's slow as fcuk due to being single point injected.
I then had a 1.4 AEX engine and immediately could feel the difference, the AEX is multi point injection and a lot faster.
I now have a 1.6 AEE engine which is also multi point, and don't personally have any problems with it other than the fact it runs out of revs quite quickly.
It has a fair amount of torque and I've kept up with a 110bhp Rover from 0-100mph.

That said, I still wouldn't bother with it personally. I'd much rather drive my VR6!

my m8 had a set of r6 carbs on his 1.3 mk2 polo, was torquey as f**k compared to what it was before and it sounded AWESOME!

he now has a rocco with a 2.0 16v running on r1 carbs and that thing is very fast! seems to give more torque gains than power, but no rolling road so dont know what its running.

he made his own manifolds. i saw the one for the polo:

he got a plate and cut 4 holes in it, then got some metal piping (same diameter as those on the carbs) and welded 4x 60mm lengths onto the plate to create a manifold. and the holes to fix the manifold to the head. then connect the carbs to the manifold using 4 silicone hose couplers.

btw, the mpg will suffer!!
