Ton of filler!!!! + Small dings
« on: 11 August 2009, 19:06 »
Well I was in the process of taking the tim off my MK2 GTI in order to spray it (think they come up well)

When I found this behind the skirt on the drivers side just behind the door

At first I thought the car had taken a kicking and someone had repaired it badly. Then I opened the door and found a spot of rust, after clearing this away I hit more filler

It looks like it has taken a serious beating at some point and bent the sill. What would you do Sand down the filler so its flat and build up any dips propaly and respray or sand all the way back to the metal (if there is any)?

Also found a load off rust around the wheel arches However that has now been sanded back and primed.

I also have a couple of dents that are curved outwards (same side) Any ideas on how to flatten them off?

As well as this one right in the curve of the door!

Cheers

Dave

Regarding the rust, unless you cut out the corroded steel, and replace with new, then your going to find yourself fighting a losing battle!
I would get the car on a ramp, and give the underside a thorough inspection before committing to any welding jobs, that may incur serious expense, that filler looks like its covering some very nasty repairs... sorry

Cheers, the rust I managed to get back to the bare metal and primed so fingers crossed should be ok. The Sills and underside are all rust free too.

What would you do about the filler? I am tempted to just flatten it off and fill in any bumps and then respray. It is only a runabout car but I do like my cars looking their best.

if u ent that worried about it i would just sand the filler bak then put some more in rub down etc till its right and as for the high spots just tap then down rough them up a bit then fill it rub down etc. but that does look like one dodgy repair i see a few at work like that, that people have done at home then bought in to be put right
