VR6 oil consumption
« on: 04 September 2004, 14:05 »
Was just wondering how much oil you would a expect a VR6 to burn.? I had mine serviced about a month or so (including an oil change) and the oil level has already dropped to just below the minimum level.? Hope I haven't done any damage......

I am presuming that the oil level was OK after the 85k service, although I didn't actually check it at the time.? Can't see any evidence of any leaks and car runs fine with no smoke from the exhaust.

Also, does anyone know what % of coolant additive that VW recommend?? Mine needs topping up and I don't have my owners manual with me.? I guess it should be around 40%?

Think the official tollerances are 1 litre every thousand miles. The vr6 I had sucked oil like it was going out of fashion, but no leaks or blue smoke. It had 80k on it at the time. Reduced when I fell for the advertising of Dura lube. Also saved engine when the coolent pipe split at about a ton when i was overtaking about 10 cars!!

I asked a similar question a while back regarding my 16v (pre vr6 ban) and was advised that it was normal consumption.

I also put in some sorta Dura lube product and it made no difference.

My VR6 was halfway to minimum 3,000 miles after service.   75k fsh no smoke etc.  Oil consumption is normal on older larger engines.

Although a full dipsticks worth in a month is quite fast.  I wouldn't worry though, just have a good look for leaks and check the levels more often.

Personally i wouldn't leave the same oil in a vr6 for more than 5,000 miles as it is vital that the timing chains are well lubricated.

Just another money burning joy of having a vr6.
I bought an oil filter at vw, while i was there i picked up an 8v GTI filter for a mate.  My filter was ?13 his was ?6.   ::)

A VR6 isn't a way of life, it's just a car.
