Problem with Coolant / STOP warning light
« on: 15 August 2009, 08:59 »
Hi Guys

Had to get recovered home last night

Got an issue with the coolant  system - Constantly getting a Warning, Check Coolant STOP message coming up. Not constantly getting heat from the heaters when they are on hot & car is boiling up to 120c. tryed to bleed the systm through with no luck for several hours last night with the vehicle running & the cap of the expansion bottle with the heaters on hot. RAC done a Combustion check - Head gasket is ok.

Thr main hose which fits onto the thermostat Housing gets rock hard when the pressure builds up.

Any ideas what the problem is as currently, I'm car less!

Cheers!!

Mate, your water pump has gone, whatever you do don't switch the car on.  The old water pumps are flawed, and eventually a bit of the plastic propeller breaks off, resulting in no water flow.

You need to get a garage to replace your water pump.  The trick is though, it's behind the cambelt etc, so that has to be removed to get to it.  So you will probably want to replace your cambelt and auxilary belt too.

Mine went a few months ago.  I had to be towed home, and then eventually got a garage to replace my water pump and all the belts, was about £330.  You might be able to get a cheaper deal somewhere though.

Sounds possbile, only thing is I had the Water pump renew in March so I think thats ruled out, unless it's faulty, the coolant seems to flow round the system, just not as it should

Thermostat or airlock maybe however does sound like the water pump has failed.

Sensor in the header tank. I think they're only a tenner from VW. (You can't buy the sensor on it's own, though!).
