Newbie with some questions
« on: 10 August 2009, 09:10 »
Hi all,

I used to have a MK2 GTI some years back and enjoyed it so much that I am getting another purely as a weekend car, I have seen one i fancy (1992 8v) which I went to look at but have a couple of questions regarding a couple of faults found...

1) MFA & Rev counter do not work (they do sometimes flicker on whilst you are driving) which I think is common on Motormeter single plug clocks, i beleive getting a set of new clocks is the answer but am i able to swap my speedo to keep the mileage ?

2) When you start the car and rev it and lift off the revs seem to fall a good way and then sort of recover to a nice steady idle...Is this normal ?...can't see what they fall to as the rev counter does not work

3) Also you have to push down on 5th to get the gear which i am thinking is the set of bushes.

Anybody give any advice on the above and state whether these are easy or difficult jobs to do ?

Cheers

Hello and welcome to the forum, same thing with me, they haunt you for years.

1  Yes, quite easy to do but tedious.
2  Sounds about right.
3  Probably the linkage bushes shot as you say or a mis alignment on the relay shaft, a cheap but tedious fix.

More important than anything mechanical, beware of rust, this can hide in many places, a Mk2 can look mint yet be a rotten mot nightmare, believe me, I've been caught out before. Run a search, there is a Mk2 buying guide link on here somewhere which covers most points.

2. no this isnt right, check the idle switch clicks and the wiring to it isnt broken.  if that checks out tune it as per the digifant guide
