Technical questions.
« on: 26 July 2009, 14:17 »
Hi guys,

I have a few general questions perhaps you can answer.

What is the reason for the (T)FSI engine's oil consumption during normal use? Is it due to the higher pressure fuel injection? Do other car manufacturers using direct fuel injection also have similar oil consumption?

How much oil is left when the yellow oil level light is illuminated?

Do all MKV GTI engines have variable valve timing and if so what type is it - is it "valve lift" type?

I am unable to source shell v-power or similar petrol but can get 99RON. I suspect though that the petrol I am running has no other additives such as detergents. Would it me worthwhile to consider using an additive and if so what would you recommend? Is there a VAG recommended additive. I am thinking here about keeping the injectors clean.

Am running completely stock and OEM 2005 with 60000km on the clock.
Thanx for your help.

Most modern engines, direct injection or not, petrol or diesel - can all suffer with high oil consumption.  The main reason is simply down to incorrect running in.

How much oil is left when the yellow oil level light is illuminated?

Not much - when the yellow light comes on - you have basically lost approx 22% of the lubricant.  The 'industry standard' is usually exactly one litre of oil between minimum and maximum.

Do all MKV GTI engines have variable valve timing and if so what type is it - is it "valve lift" type?

Yup, they all have VVT - but only for the inlet valves.  Ant the lift rate is constant, not variable like the Audi-derrived Mk6 GTI engine.

I am unable to source shell v-power or similar petrol but can get 99RON. I suspect though that the petrol I am running has no other additives such as detergents.

Explain more?

VW do their own petrol fuel additive - G 001 700 03 - about £6 for a 150ml bottle - good for three full tanks.

You might want to look at the 'maintenance & info' sub-forum, and download some of the free workshop manuals I listed.
