If its not using water or mixing water with oil or performace/compression issues then probably not gasket

A strong smell could be a blocked breather hose or the block on top the cam cover.

Reference the smoking, sounds like oil is leaking down into the bores which suggest a valve guide or seal problem or could be a ring issue.

Might be a good idea to carry out a compression test as your next move.

Wayne, just checked and compression seems fine and no obvious oil use since the last service about 6 months ago.
Is it possible that a bloked breather pipe can be the cause of the smoke at startup??

Smoking on start up is oil in the combustion chamber caused by an internal leak. (seal gasket crack etc)
This leak may be very small and not a problem at the moment.
It might be the start of something serious, it will shag your cat though
My bet is valve stems if the compression is ok
