Urgent help needed fuel pump issues
« on: 08 August 2009, 22:35 »
My mk2 8v k jet will not start it turns over fires then dies.My other mk2 you can hear the fuel pump prime first but there is no noise from this one i tried checking relay think that is ok.There is no power in the boot on the 2 pin plug i found an old amp cable stuffed that in the connector and the pump came on and ran.Any idea can i just leave it running on a switch or is there a fuel pump fuse.
It was fine when i last used it about three weeks ago.Only problem is im blocking my sisters drive which is uphill so i cant even push it out the way.
Your wisdom would be great

Had a look tried a couple more things no joy.Can i run it all the time and be safe on permanent power.
Failing that is it worth stripping back from the fuse box and re wiring the pump.

Thanks

Check you're getting power at the fusebox end with a multimeter mate. Also check for continuity across the fuel pump loom.

Could be the relay has gone.. It'd be worth getting another one from the scrappy to try?

where did you stuff the amp cable to get the pump going? if it was the relay socket the fuses are all fine, either the relay at fault, you have the wrong relay fitted, or the rev counter wire at the coil is disconnected.
k-jet 8v needs a different relay to digi and 16v as they have a trigger from the ecu, k-jet 8v has a rev counter signal instead. check the red/black wire is fitted at the coil, and the coil is wired up right, the black wires go to pin 15/+ve side of the coil and the red black & green wiresgo to pin 1/-ve side.

As RJ said, the pulsed input from the coil is what keeps the relay open. This relies on the source pulse and that the 555 timer in the relay hasn't died.

Running it on a permanent live is dangerous, if you have a bump a normal relay would cut fuel when the dizzy stops - yours would continue to maintain pressure.

As i was told and in quite a few posts it was the relay i think.Armed with a testlight a multimeter i began testing the fuse box, power at the fuse power at the relay still nothing at the pump.As i went back to the fuse box the mfa stalk  stuck right in my eye lol.So in the heat of the moment i began to punch the fuse box hey presto the pump came on so i think the relay must have been stuck or something.
The only thing is it idles quite rough and the little thing with the plug in it next to the air box ticks quite loud when the revs die.Thats next but what is it?
thanks for your help we are on the road again
