gearbox cleaning help

hi
What would you recomend for getting the gearbox nice and clean(back to the aluminium colour). I have tryed so many different things from halfords and nothing helps.
Any advice would be most grateful. Thanks

I cleaned mine whilst it was out of the car. Just used paraffin, very tedious, took a lot of time and effort. Obviously it didn't come up nice and shiny, more like dull and grey..........but at least it's all nice and clean.

if its oil and grease on your box have you tried gunk!
a paint bruch and gunk may do the trick!!!
it got my head looking clean when i did it!
if its been painted like the recon boxes have then paint stripper! but you have to be extremely careful as to not get it on anything else eg your wheels bodywork etc!
nitro mors is the best stripper but when sprayed my metro rear lights in tint spray i tried to remove it with this and it melted the lights! i had to get new ones from scrappers! also it has been known to cause cancer if you get it on your skin! its deadly stuff! so if you ever use it use it careful and wear rubber gloves!
in fact unless the box is out of the car it wouldnt be worth using it as it would probibly go everywhere and it would probibly end up getting on your bodywork!
