16v Engine Swap
« on: 31 August 2004, 22:23 »
i have access to a really go 16v lump with 90k and FSH, well actually the complete car so g-box wheels etc...
what i was planning to do was get a 16v with a blown engine or similar and do a swap, just windering if anyone out there has done such a thing and how hard you found it. are there any good manuals or web pages on engine swaps?
the next thing was if i do this i was going to replace the cltch and cam belt whilst the engine was out, what else do you think i should do? thanks for any answers

I've done an engine swap myself on an 8v. It was the first time I undertook such a job. The most complicated thing I did before that was to take out a gearbox. The best advice I can give you is to buy a Haynes manual and study it thoroughly before even thinking about the engine swap, get yourself familiar with the various parts etc.

Think about whether you are going to do a straight swap or while the engine is out, do you want to replace other parts? It depends on your budget and if you plan on keeping the car long term.

I would certainly replace the clutch + belts, but while mine was out I replaced the water pump, thermostat, piston rings, cylinder head recon, etc. I plan on taking that engine with me for my next golf!! ;)

Post some pics if you go ahead with the swap :)

taking pictures for refernence is a good idea so you know how to connect it together again! and label everyting and get lots of dishes to put seperate bits in, label those as well. trust me on this.
