I've done an engine swap myself on an 8v. It was the first time I undertook such a job. The most complicated thing I did before that was to take out a gearbox. The best advice I can give you is to buy a Haynes manual and study it thoroughly before even thinking about the engine swap, get yourself familiar with the various parts etc.
Think about whether you are going to do a straight swap or while the engine is out, do you want to replace other parts? It depends on your budget and if you plan on keeping the car long term.
I would certainly replace the clutch + belts, but while mine was out I replaced the water pump, thermostat, piston rings, cylinder head recon, etc. I plan on taking that engine with me for my next golf!!
Post some pics if you go ahead with the swap
