Glue removal?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove some glue on the rear panel of my car.
Little sods stuck a 2p on the tailgate which the previous owner removed but there is a thick residue of hardened glue.
Don't want to damage the paintwork

see if you can soften it up with boiling water and/or a hair dryer and try some tar remover on it

I'll try that. It looks rock hard but the Tar remover is a good idea
