Brake upgrade
« on: 22 July 2009, 13:54 »
Hi everybody! (hi dr nick!)

I know this has already covered but before you either remove or critisize, I can't find out what I need to know!

I need to know what I can fit to my vehicle (1996 1.9TDi 90bhp AHU) in terms of disc/caliper/carrier upgrade - the other thing is i'm running on 14" alloys so am not sure what will actually fit without fouling the wheels....

Front brakes are those which i'm thinking of changing, the rear drums will do (unless there's something I can do there too?)

Thanks!

This is a strange thread, as ive seen 288mm brake disks on a 1.4 R Reg Mk3.... (As Standard) Yes standard.
They are led to beleive that VW either had shortage of the smaller disks or had a massive stock of the 288mm disks.
That is why its a nightmare when buying disks and pads... You either have to measure them or bring one in.

So I would think, any of the mk3 disks would work, but some work may need doing???
Black 8v GTI............. Whats a Waffle Valve?

What about Corrado discs up front, think they might go on MK3 4 stud
Might need 15" wheels, cant remeber if i ran em under my 14" P slots
Should be able to find something on the search button
Either that or go for full 5 stud 15" swap from GTI

you can use 256mm vented mk2 diss and pads using the o.e calipers but you'll need the carriers (and slimmer mk2 pads)

do what i have done. i posted this not long ago, lots of info around the forum, might be worth a search.

g60 brakes up front (mk2 16v hubs, mk3 gti 280 calipers/carriers, g60 discs, mk3 gti pads).

rear, keep your drums, unless you want discs, then you gotta get a mk3 gti rear beam and get some mk2 gti rear discs.

although not sure if you can run 280's under 14" wheels :undecided:

LL ;)
