Is this possible?
« on: 23 July 2009, 17:52 »
Hi all,

I recently sent my K Jet head to a machinest to have a stud removed and the head skimmed. Upon collecting it I noticed they had loosened all the nuts and bolts that were attatched to it (Water pump bolts, rocker cover studs and the main sprocket nut!!!).

Before taking the head off i marked everythign up with tip ex to minimise chances of timing being out, now when refiting the head i noticed that the main bolt on the spocket of teh head was loose, I tightened it up and put it all together according to the timing marks.

My question is, if they undid the head sprocket bolt, could it have been turned independently of the camshaft, i.e. when refiting according to marks on the sprocket i made could the valves be in a different position causing the timing to be out?

Reason I ask is im having trouble starting the engine after having the head work done.

Thanks

As far as i remember there is a dow on the cam shaft and a cut out on the cam pulley so it can only go on in one place. Have you checked timing on the dizzy?

As above the cam sprocket is on a keyway.

thats great news, yea i marked the rotor arm in relation to the dizzy, the crank in relation to block and belt, and the cam sprocket in relation to mark on the head and belt so in theory every thing is sweet.

Does it matter if there isnt much oil (1 letre) or coolant as i just want to check its all working before filling her up

Have you had the car long, the reason i ask is one of my old mk2s wouldn't start after doing the head, i did the same, marked everything etc, but it wouldn't start, turns out the previous owner had put the dizzy on 180 out, not sure how as it would have had to be forced in to place because of the locating notch, so turned when i refitted the right way round everything was wrong, that took a hell of alot of head scratching!

The oil is not the problem but i wouldnt be running my engine with only one ltr of oil in it.  :undecided:

You need oil at least to half way between the dipstick marks especially if you have a new 'empty' filter on it, got loads of oilways and hydraulic tappets to fill, if it fires up it will need the oil pronto. Fill cooling system with water, its free, you can drain & add coolant later when up & running

Fill it with oil or you'll be looking for a new engine.

I wouldn't bother with coolant for first fire though.

Remember, because it's in a T25 you'll need to bleed the radiator at the front to get the full 10 litres or so of coolant on board.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

i would say 90% of non starting issues with 8 valves after matance involvin the head off is the timeing / plug leads been round the wrong way
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

take the sprocket off, if the bolt was loose the key would have taken all the train which it isnt designed for so it could have sheared, or they simply might have forgot to put it back in.
Also when you come to refit it put the cam to TDC and put the sprocket back on so that there is a punch mark lined up with the head surface round the front of the head, its possible to put it on the wrong way which would mean non of the marks line up.
The cam is at TDC when the lobes on #1 cylinder point up & away from each other like this -> |\  /|
