Make sure you guys with mark 2's only use a semi synthetic, I used Magnatec and had the same problems, I now use Quantum Synthetic which is what they sell at the VW dealers and it works a treat. Usually due to worn piston rings or liner or putting too much oil in (mk2's prefer 3/4 full, about 3-3.5 litres) Also the crankcase breather valve (that black think sitting on top of the rocker cover) when replaced can reveal problems due to the fact the oil pressure increases. make sure all hose clips are tight.
