Hi all

Got a 90 8v gti about 6 months ago, everythings been fine until recently when I did an oil change. Since then it kicks out smoke when it's under load & it's losing oil (about a litre a month) it also smells of fuel !! Before the oil change it never smoked or lost any oil. Performance still seems ok, however I had my doors totally blown off by an G plate 16v last week. I'm running it on Castrol GTX.

Any ideas ??

May be blocked oil breather in the sump. Apparently an easy job to fix.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the crank case breather pipe, it had perished quite badly.

My 8v is a bit smokey too! is the crank case breather pipe easy to find / replace?

I have just brought an 87 8v gti. What a great car but i am having the same problem how much do you think it would cost to sort out. :P

The crank case breather should be easy to find. I have a 16v and it is the pipe attatched to the crankcase which will run to the air intake. The common problem is that they perish quite easily and when you accelerate hard they don't bypass the air so you end up with a puff of smoke on the next gear change.
Should be very easy to sort out. Other than that it could be your oil seals which are more complicated to replaced.
I would start with the easier parts to replace and work your way up.

Make sure you guys with mark 2's only use a semi synthetic, I used Magnatec and had the same problems, I now use Quantum Synthetic which is what they sell at the VW dealers and it works a treat.  Usually due to worn piston rings or liner or putting too much oil in (mk2's prefer 3/4 full, about 3-3.5 litres) Also the crankcase breather valve (that black think sitting on top of the rocker cover) when replaced can reveal problems due to the fact the oil pressure increases. make sure all hose clips are tight.

If the cars a mk2 its too old to have fully synthetic and the oil just gets past the piston rings and burns off.....
