Ignition switch
« on: 06 March 2011, 18:35 »
Had a few problems with my car starting eliminated all the obvious n was left with the ignition switch or wiring to the starter motor.

Is it easy to replace? Does it require a new key and barrel? Or can u just get the bit on it's own? Also how do I get to it to replace it?!

Cheers

No you can buy the swtch on it's own I done mine it's not the easiest of jobs there is a how to on here somewhere. Buy a new one from vw it's about £20 from memory. Bridge the 2 wires on the starter and if it turns then it will most likely be the switch.

Not sure if that would work on a mk3 due to the immob.

I fitted a push start aswell. Still use the key to go to 2nd position, button just makes the contact for starter. Button is about £3 from maplins.

Yea immob wont be a problem as it still uses the key to switch everything on etc.

before you go to the hassle of changing it, disconnect the plug to the old one and put it on the new switch. put your key into the ignition as normal so immob + steering lock are deactivated, then use a screwdriver to turn the new switch. if car fires up and drives fine, then change your switch. if not put it in the spares box and look elsewhere for the problem!
