Treatment To New 18" Alloys
« on: 21 May 2009, 10:18 »
Hi,

As commented in the main forum im picking up an 06 plate GTi friday, it had brand new 18" monza's replaced under warranty.

As the wheels are brand new, is there any recommended treatment to seal the wheels or anything to prevent white worm in the future?

Also the hubs had a little rust on, though lack of use, how to I shift this?

Thanks

You'd be better off posting this in the detailing section

Poorboys wheel sealant is good for the alloys and I'd recommend a stiff wire brush to get the excess rust off the hubs and then a couple of coats of either black or silver smooth hammerite, being careful not to get any onto the discs or the mounting face.

And use some 'anti-seize' paste on the mating surfaces of the wheel - the flat faces of the wheel and disc hub, the circular spigot ring, the wheel bolt threads, and the wheel bolt conical faces.

Galvanic corrosion is THE biggest cause of alloy wheel corrosion (obviously apart from any 'mechanical damage' such as kerbing or a gash tyre fitter whacking the bolt holes with a windy gun).

If you are anywhere near a Cromwell Industrial Supplies - look em up on www.Cromwell.co.uk - and order in a pot of Bostick Never-Seez 'Pure Nickel Special' NSN-165.  Though expensive, this is WWWWWAAAAAAAYYYYY better than any copper grease.

^^^ all good advice.

I had new Monzas put on my 06 GTI under warranty and did the following to the wheels when they were new:

Wash
Dry
Polish with Autoglym Super Resin Polish (twice).
2 coats of Chemical Guys Jetseal 109
2 coats of good quality wax (i used Autoglym HD Wax).

Top up your wax layer every few months.

Word of warning - avoid using harsh wheel cleaners like Wonder Wheels as these can attack the rims and will cause corrosion to any areas where the lacquer is broken (stone chips etc). To be honest though, if you have a good layer of wax on the wheels you be able to clean them easily with just your usual water/shampoo combo anyway.

This makes the alloys look lovely, makes them a doddle to clean, and should help protect them.
