Weeks work
« on: 30 June 2009, 09:42 »
Had a week off work last week (Should have taken two weeks off if I knew the weather was going to be this good!). Decided to do a few minor bits to the golf. Firstly, gave her a good clean. I wanted to have a go at claying her, but I ran out of time.

Then I took the wheels off, and cleaned of the majority of the brake dust build up from behind them. I didn't go mental on them as I am planning to get them refurbed at some point. Hopefully, they will stay a bit cleaner when it rains now. I have been eyeing up some BBS wheel centers too, but I will probably wait until I have the wheels refurbed tbh.

Then I decided to pain my calipers red. I was a bit unsure of what I was doing, but did a search and read through a few posts. I was sure I was going to seize my brakes somehow but all seems to be okay (I left the calipers on whilst I painted). It wasn't the neatest paint job ever done (I couldn't work out if it was safe to remove the silver pin from the fronts, or how to do it!), but once the wheels were back on, they look fine.

I just used Smooth Red Hammerite and spent about 30mins cleaning them with a wire brush.

Finally, I bought some VW Logo mudflaps off of someone who was breaking their Golf. I tided these up, rubbed them down to remove all the pits and scrapes and gave them a fresh spray of black. I fitted these but still need to spray the VW logos and fix them back on for the finishing touch. Will update with pics once they are done.

That looks amazing. Great job! Inspired to do mine now I think--how many tins of Hammerite did you use?

I bought one tin of hammerite and one spray can of brake cleaner. Used pretty much all the brake cleaner as its all in the prep (or so I've read). I barely used half of the hammerite. The key was patients and lots of thin layers.
