Clutch slip or loss of traction?

Today after work I went home by highway.
Car was cold so I let it warm up about five minutes (by that time water was 90 for a minute or two).
Was driving a steady 120kph. Then, in 6th gear, I put the pedal to the metal, it was about 3000rpm and I had a sudden surge to 3500rpm without any acceleration.  :huh:

Now, my car (manual Edition 30) is tuned by Oettinger to 330hp/460Nm and optimized for Shell 100 gas. Oettinger 330/460 map is for a car with VW original downpipe with standard 800-cell cat. I also had a 3-inch downpipe with 200-cell cat installed, so really don't know how much power the car has.

Anyway, after I had this RPM surge, I waited a little and repeated - 120kph, 6th gear, pedal to the metal till 160-180kph, no surge.  :huh:

So what was it, just a little traction loss? I did not see any traction warning light (though I was not looking specifically). OR was the clutch just cold and slipped? OR do I have real clutch problems?   :undecided:

Sounds like clutch slip to me.

Think its reasonably common in remapped cars such as yours with the standard clutch and is much more apparant in high gears.

A good test for clutch slip is exactly what you have done. Select a high gear and floor it low down where all the torque is. So on face value it appears your clutch may be on its way out. But you will know if the clutch is on its last legs because its like a slippery slope. Once it happens, it generally starts to happen quite frequently.

On the other hand you may of just hit a pool of water and not noticed the traction control light come on.

You should wait a little longer b4 puting the pedal to the metal!,
as the temp guage is only for the coolant in the engine, oil takes a little longer to completly warm up and start lubricating engine components.

You are aware the oil takes much longer than the water to reach temp (on a slow run could take 10-15 mins to be fully heated)

Deffo clutch slip though! You cant get away with that much power on a car not built for it originally and not need to upgrade parts.

a surge from 3 to 3.5k revs isn't a lot. Some manuals have surges from 2.5k to 5.5k. It maybe that you had a little traction issue and not clutch slip at all, so keep an eye on it at the moment and start saving is my advice. If the surges start becoming more prominent ...ie in more gears and larger surges as previously mentioned, then get it in for a sach's clutch upgrade.  :cool:

I do get surges around 3000RPM. Today, as well. At least it sounded like a surge, I did not look closely on tachometer, as the car accelerates like crazy from 3000RPM.  :shocked:
Already wrote Sachs an email and asked a local VW dealership how much new clutch installation would cost. I will not wait and monitor, I'll just get the new clutch plates in there. I just hope the flywheel is in order, as I am not keen on changing that as well.  :lipsrsealed:

Today I've been driving behind a black Mk6 GTI. Nice thick pipes and sound.  :smiley:
Also, read a review of TT-RS. It was more positive than what I've read before. I wonder what that car feels like. And that five is easily tuned to 400hp.  :lipsrsealed:

You have to change the flywheel as well.Original Flywheel is to weak for the sachs plates !
