Dead as a stamp
« on: 10 June 2009, 14:18 »
Hey all

Over the last while my '87 2.0 16v has gotten really dead. It used to be that no matter what revs you were sitting at, or how far down the throttle was pressed, she would just keep powering on even more if you planted the throttle.

Now she is so dead, and has so many flat spots, that she wouldn't pull you out of bed.

I intend to use the maintenance section for this, but would appreciate some advice in which direction to go.

I changed the spark plugs within the last 10k, to bosh super 4s (or something like that).

I changed the fuel filter and cleaned the air filter the other evening which helped things very slightly.

Where should I look next please?

I would look for a vac leak first, the rubber pipes from the metering head to the throttle body can split and you don't even see it. Also check all the pipes that connect into it. The fact that you mention it has got worse over some time suggests a leak that was getting bigger? If all that lot is found OK then start checking all the other stuff.

When you say 2.0L, is it a full ABF etc, or just the larger bottom end runnign on K-Jet?

Assuming its still k-jet, here are a few ideas:

1. Fuel pressure is low. Check both pumps are operating well.
2. Timing/CO2 is out
3. Compression is low for some reason (valve seals etc.)
4. Temp sensors
5. ECU/TCI/Coil issue
6. Leads are knackered. Also rotor arm and dizzy cap.
7. Worn/clogged injectors or injector seals
8. 10,000 miles is more than I would go on the same spark plugs
9. 5th injector / WUR issues.  Is it better, worse, or the same when cold?
