Hi mate welcome to the site, that's a question that's been asked many times before, the mk1 is hard to price up, basically they will go for what people are prepared to pay for them, if you want a project then you can probably pick up a rough one for ?500 or less if you keep looking, but if you want a decent runner you are looking at ?1500 up to ?3500 and some even command more.  :(

Best places to look is autotrader.co.uk and get the VW mags like PerformanceVW and especially the Golf+ mag, look in the classifieds of these mags. If you go to www.thegolf.co.uk and click classifieds you can see how much some mk1s are going for on there. Happy hunting  :)

If you then want to know what to look for when buying then read this  :)-

I paid ?900 for my 1983 cabriolet 1.8 GTI.
It has hardly any rust, the hood is in great nick, and mechanically it is just fine.
I figure I got a bargain.

It all depends on who is selling the car.  Practical Classics magazine prices a condition 3 (I.e requiring a complete rebuild) at ?100, but I have seen cars for restoration in the classifieds of the same mag for ?800.

I don't think you neccessarily need to spend over 1K, so long as you are prepared to go and see plenty of cars before you come across 'the right one'.

I would also consult your local Ads paper (e.g. Loot ot Admag), these tend to have some very cheap cars that are not advertised elsewhere, and they are assured of being local.

good luck finding a good one, its starting to seem very hard to come by quality ones.  i spotted this in autotrader.

1983 VOLKSWAGEN Golf Gti MKI, 1983,
Y reg. original 1800 GTi standard condition, MoTd service history, excellent engine, drives very well, up and coming classic. ?950.

i reckon its dead cheap for an mot'd tidy mark 1.  theres always bargains to be had, my white project tintop had been sitting in a shed for 5 years and the owner had no idea what the parts were worth.  my cab i paid a grand for but was advertised for ?3000 at the beginning of last summer before a boyracer got hold of it  ::)

Bodywork is everything on Mk1s. Check for rust and poor repairs in the usual spots inc arches (under plastic trims), sills, inner wings, sunroofs and valences. Body work is expensive and panels are hard to come by. Check also fuel lines under car and signs that the filters have been replaced with quality items. Also check interior trim as parts are quite rare. Mechanicals are less of a worry as parts are cheap, plentiful and easy to replace.

You need to spend 2k without buying one and spending more on repairs.
