20vT head on 8v or 16v Block?
« on: 29 May 2009, 09:20 »
Helo fellow Dubberz... Im still Very fresh here from South Africa but with some questions...
Currently driving a 89 mk2 gti 1.8 16V AND building a 78 mk1 3door from scratch!
Im having trouble choozing a powerplant!! have a 2l 8v motor from a mk3 Jetta just sitting there but thats NOT enough power (have to watch the finance also). then theres a 20vT head from a 2l A4 Turbo at my disposal..... :undecided: IS IT POSSIBLE TO FIT THIS HEAD ON THE 8V BLOCK???WHERE DOES MY HEADACHE AND HEARTACHE START??? I was told on vwgolmk1 that a guy named "Danny_p" could maybe give me some pointers here... I'd LARGELY APPRECIATE IT if i can get any help at all whatsoever!!!

it is possible sort of if your lucky

some 20V heads will go on some 2ltr blocks with varying degrese of work.   varying from  pita  to not worth the effort.  some early 20v heads wiill go on late 8v blocks with work to the oil ways it's not an optimal conversion tho but it can go. seems  later 20v heads won't go tho as oilways are just to diffrnet to make it practical. still need diffrent pistons ect.  now that 2.0 20v blocks exist  and can be had quite cheeply it's a horribly expensive and pointless conversion with no advantage.

id say ether buy a 2.0 16v and run it on oem managment or standalone and itbs  both will make a mk1 intresting.  or a 1.8 20v motor and MS and itbs  w should be a hoot

all the VW's have gone bar 1.

sell the 2.0 8v.

the 2.0 16v ABF is a very good enigne IMO     bhp/£  is good there reliable and good on fuel.   not a straight fit into a mk1  you have to cut the mounts and put them 15mm on the piss in a downwards direction.

with the std digifant  my mk 2 pulled 173 bhp on a stock motor with just a tubular, did my own chip it now running 180 - 185 ish acording to arse dyno. if you want more power go itb's and megasquirt but you can do that at a later date

NA 20v would go well in itbs  but would have to fork out for the ecu at time of build

 So you would say my best bet right now for the quest for more power is the 16v ABF? Whas the difference between the difrent 2L 16v powerplants?? How much can i get out of a 16v KR? Thanx for the reply mate

I wasnt aware you had to modify mounts to fit an abf to a mk1, mate has one in his cabby and another has one in his scirocco, both went in with no mods?
9a/6a 2.0 16v block is physically the same as a 1.8 16v, abf is a bit taller.

edit: unless you meant small block -> large block mods required on the engine mount bracket?

 maybe if its the 1.1 mount you have to move it up a few inches. Or atleast mine has to...

yeah for the 1.0-1.3 drivers mount deffo needs moving for any big block swap, you have to move it up the chassis leg, and flip it upside down.  IIRC the mk1 owners club has an awesome guide on it :)

you don't have to modify the mounts for abf but its a nicer fit if you keep the efi,

otherwise it sits a bit tall   also makes manifold easyer
