Windscreen replacement, mk2
« on: 07 June 2009, 16:31 »
Got hold of a new windscreen as my current one has a massive crack in it... does anyone know how to change it? Is it just a case of pulling the seal back, getting something in there and popping it out?

:)

no, really its a 2 man job, place the glass in the rubber then thread some thin rope or washing line into the part of the rubber that fit over the lip of the opening plenty of washing up liquid with the end of the rope inside the carget you pal to apply gentle pressure to the screen as you slowly pull the rope out pulling the rubber over the lip of the windscreen opening. or pay someone to do it who knows how

All I know is a pro windscreen man replaced the front glass on my MK2 in about 20 minutes on his own and had a fag break halfway through.

DON'T use fairy liquid. it contains salt and that's the last thing you want hanging around in the rubbers to rot the scuttle. Vasaline or similar is much better.

When I did mine I bought a new rubber seal so just cut the old seal out and then lubed up the new one. Took me and a mate a couple of hours as we'd never done one before. It is much easier with 2 peeps as one can push the screen in while the other pulls out the line to pop the rubber over the lip. Hardest bit is around the bottom where the dash meets the screen.

Fella that did mine then must have had a bad day or was paid by the minute.
