Radiator fan
« on: 10 August 2004, 18:28 »
The bearing has just gone in mine so I popped into GSF at the weekend to which they supplied me with a new unit. When I got home I realised the new fan had a 3 pin plug and the one still on the car has a 2 pin block shaped plug.

Tonight I popped back to GSF to swap it for for a 2 pin fan to which I was told that you can no longer get fans with 2 pins, intead I'll have to cut the current plug on the car and fit a 3 pin.

This seems a bit stupid that you can no longer get a 2 pin seeing the amount of mk2's still on the road these days which could face similar problems to mine.

Has anybody else had similar problems to this??

Also, a 3 pin requires 3 wires, the current plug obviously has 2!

i just got a loom from the breakers for the 2 speed fan (3 pin) and changed the plug at the bottom of the radiator for the 2 speed one too. i think this is all thats different.

if you cant be arsed im sure you could just wire it up with spade connectors and miss out the third connector on the back of the rad fan ;)

I mite have a trawl down the local scrappies at the weekend as I know there are (or we're) a couple of mk2's lying around.

Do you know which pin to miss out if I was to wire using 2 wires as the plug sits right up on the fan, not revealling the wires behind?? :-\

the thermostat plug is the same fitting as the 2 speed i think, so just follow the wires from there ;)

why not convert your loom so you can fit the 2 speed fan? I believe all you need is the 2 speed type rad temp sensor and the cables from the sensor to the fan.

My Rad fan has 3 pins, and only two wires.  I use the outer pins and leave the middle one.  I don't think I'm using the potential of a dual speed fan, but I havent had any problems; except...

I need to keep an eye on my mfd in oil temp mode coz the rad fan plug comes loose from time to time, and I have to catch it early before overheating.  I've tried squeezing the contacts onto the pins harder with pliers, it helps!

Thanks Guys!

I've been told to use the 2 outer pins and leave the middle one alone which is what I think I'll do for a short term measure (I'm off to Newquay next weekend from Southampton, 200 mile drive on mainly country roads, lots of summer traffic jams, my fan will be working overtime).

Once I'm back I'll get myself a loom form the knackers yard and see how I get on from there! :)
