Does the airbox sit at the back on that engine?
If so you will suck in hot air.
Gti's/Vr6's the box sits at the front, so ideal for picking up a good supply off cool air.

It sits on top of the engine, although i believe you get a pipe that makes the cone sit in the same sort of position as the gti. The adaption pipe goes up and to the left sort of thing. Can see it in my head. Will try and a find a pic.

I'm still in favour of panel filter and drilled box on gti's over induction kits.
You then get good air flow without the hot air problems.
This obviously won't apply to the 1.8 engine.

As i said earlier. This car isnt a performance machine. Do it for the noise and what you like.

If you gain 1bhp, or loose it through heat soak.

Who gives a crap, you probably loose more bhp through not servicing it right, and its age.
