TDI Automatic
« on: 07 May 2009, 15:53 »
Did they ever make a MK3 TDI auto?  I cant find any anwhere, I really want one, fed up with changing gear arround town,  As long as i have at least one manual for the weekends im happy

Im thinking of sticking an auto box in if they are hard to get hold of.

Yes they did, I have an autocar road test at home somewhere, going to be hard to find one to be honest.

finding the box off one for my TDI would be harder i suppose... I dont like the idea of running a 1.8L petrol auto box on a TDI, i can imagen it eating its self to bits with the torque, or constantly shifting up when i acclerate

Worth bearing in mind that the Tdi / auto setup was in a lot of other cars as well so may not be to hard to find, seat / skoda etc.

good point! Still dont see many auto diesels, I did come across a VR6 auto which defeats the object but its so very tempting,  the idea is to have the slow runabout an auto and the fast weekend car the manual

You may be able to convert it to auto but it will be a lot of work.

I'm sure the tdi uses the same box as the vr/16v? should be an 02a if I'm right so a conversion wouldn't be too difficult!! (I know how much you like working on your mk3's so lets see it done )

The VR6 box its the same model as the TDI, they are all 02A so thats a good start...  i put a new manual box on this car last week, so kinda wasted my time a bit, haha the conversion would be no problem for me,  its finding the box but it looks like there are a fair few others with this auto tdi box.   VR6 box would fit.. not sure how the ratios work though, cant quite get my head around the theory of automatic gearing and ratios compared to manual gear sets  :undecided:

It is all down to the torque converter and how the control ecu is set.
