does your car have an alt belt tensioner wheel, or does the alternator have a big spring under it?  also any idea what amp it is, my assumtion being a diesel it'll have a 90a one on there

I'll get the car back tomorrow. However, having had to replace the water pump due to over tensioned belt, my mechanic has been unable to cease the squeeking upon fitting new belt. He suggests this is an inner bearing on the alternator which sounds like the belt slipping.
It's extremely annoying as we had intended on selling the car when we get to France. It's ex-Spanish lhd car.

Does sound like a bearing has seized in the alternator to be honest.

short of isolating the belts individually guess there's no real way of telling without replacing unit?
Hence wish to identfy the model and change as cost effectively as poss.

if you spin the alt by hand you may feel the bearings are rough, certainly could on my knackered one. other option is the 'mechanics stethoscope' long screwdriver to your ear (blunt end obv ) touch other end to various parts of engine till you locate source of the noise :)

Assuming the alt. is indeed at fault, are there any identifiable serial nos that will lead to a conclusion a to a replacement? I'm hoping to get one from a dismantlers and would need to know what other models carried this part.
Thanks

main thing to check if a) what rating it is (70 or 90 usually, maybe 120 if aircon) and b) if it is the type with the seperate tensioner wheel, or a great big spring underneath :)

there are 2 physical shapes of alt, once you know the rating just need to figure out which shape you need.  The spring loaded type is on early non-a/c models, the seperate tensioner setup is fitted to A/C and later models, though not sure of the exact date.  1.8-2.0 ones will work, dont think the 1.4 or 1.6 ones will.  Oh and the VR6 alt will bolt up to the seperate tensioner setup, but you need to swap the alt pulley over.

and seperate tensioner:

Thanks, very concise.
My current thinking, no pun intended, is that I might have the 70amp alt.  My car really is the most basic, no aircon, wind up windows etc.
When I pick it back up tomorrow I will investigate the alt first hand and maybe post an image for discussion if I remain unsure.
Your image links look to be of the same part however.
If I were to fit say a 90 alt, would there be any other issues regarding a higher output than original?

Again, thanks for all the assistance.
