Thought i'd cover everything in one post.  Haven't been on here in a while, not much at all since the servers went down last year.
Have been driving an 8v gti for almost a year, but have been thinking about a possible upgrade if the right car came about. Was browsing ebay last week and stumbled across a black VR6 highline, 94000 miles on the clock, mot'd and taxed until september, no reserve and with 1 hour left the bid was at £1100. Anyhoo, with about 1 minute left i bid on it and won, paying 1300 quid.  A big gamble seeing as i had never seen the car let alone test drive the thing, but having made a 120 mile road trip to collect the thing i think i may have found an absolute bargain.  Not only does it only have 94000 miles, but a full service history to go with it, the engine sounds absolutely fantastic and runs so smoothly.  The only downsides are the fact that its been used as a family car the last couple of years so there are some nicks here and there, but nothing a little bit of touching up can't sort, and the driver side electric windows don't work (this was detailed in the item description), bringing me onto my next point.

Neither the driver electric window or the driver side passenger electric window work, at first i thought it may be a wiring problem, however when you press the window button you can definitely hear a click coming from within side the door, suggesting that power is reaching the motor.  I'm wondering if the regulators have just died, something i know is very common, because lets be honest, the regulators in mk3 golfs are crap.  Its easy enough for me to test this, i just take the working regulator out of my 8v gti and stick it in the vr6, but was wondering if there may be some other issue, before i waste time taking apart two doors.

Finally, now i have the VR6 i just don't have the need for my 8v.  it failed its mot last weekend due to the front shocks being at the end of their life.  I am getting this sorted though and it will have a full mot by the weekend, at which point i will be putting it up for sale. I will stick an advert up on here but just wanted to generate some interest from now, so if anyone is interested send me a message.

cheers

i dont know if this will help, but i had a similar problem with my 8v gti. the switch in the driver door wouldn't drop or lift the driver window, and it wouldn't lift the passenger window, but it would drop the passenger window. and on inspection it was a severed earth in the rubber sleeve where it leaves the door panel and plugs into the body
