My new Mk1 - Living a childhood dream
« on: 14 April 2009, 13:26 »
Greetings fellow Mk1 Owners. Yay! Feels good to be able to call myself an "owner". My life long wait is finally over. I've finally found a mk1 GTI. a 1982/3 Model with a DX engine code.

In the UK, Mk1s are available if you look around, in all sorts of states, but over here where i'm from, Mk1s are near impossible to find. In a population of 450,000, there are less than 20 mk1s that are still in use. Most of them Cabs and maybe 2-3 GTIs (including the one I have).

Anyways, the one i found seems to be in pretty good nick. There was a bit of a pool inside but that's been dried out now. It hasn't been started in over a year and is at the 210,000km mark. The main reason it hasn't been started in that long is due to a wiring problem. Me n a friend went to try n start it and it wouldn't. We tried a push start but that wouldn't work either. Hmm...we suspect it's wiring for the ignition but in all honesty, my knowledge of this car and the mechanics is quite limited. but...i'm working on it.

The whole point of this thread is to seek some assistance from all of you experienced Mk1 owners out there. I'd greatly appreciate any help you can give me.

To get this baby started what should I look at? Which parts should I get replacements for? Timing belt? Oil filter? anything else?

Thanks in advanced.

Here are a couple of pics of my new toy...

is it turning over

does it hav a spark on all cylinders

and is there petrol gettin through to the inlet manifold

if they r all yes then u need to look at the valve and ignition timing
