Dash clocks and differences between them.
« on: 22 April 2009, 09:06 »
Have acquired a 'new' set of clocks for my 1991 Mk2..... but they are not quite the same as the ones already installed.....

on the replacement, the speedo has a max of 120mph (one in car has 140)
on the replacement there is a red warning light in the temp gauge (no light on one in car)
on the replacment the rev counter is 1x1000 (10x100 on existing one)

......... will the replacement fit ....?   or have I made a mistake in buying the replacement?

oops! ( am a bit annoyed with myself for not double checking 'like for like'...)

M.

...... a bit of searching  and it would appear that the 1990 > models have ONE plug for the clocks. Other differences stated above must have accompanied this change.
.... but... the hazard switch on my car is on the dash - not the column.... Hmm!

Does anyone know accurately when this change took place.... just so that I can correctly advertise this set of clocks that are clearly of no use to me.

in germany the change was in 89, by the time they got imported and registered it was 1990 over here, which is where '90spec' comes from, even though technically its not quite. You do sometimes see early examples registed in 89 too, but not often.  Also you often got pre-90 models sat around on the forcourt waiting to be sold, so you sometimes see post 90 registed pre-90 MK2s!

Best thing to say in the advertisement is they are pre-90 MK2 clocks, and only fit models with a hazard switch on the dash.  The hazard switch location is the best way to be sure of what spec electrics are fitted to your car :)

Oh and the 2 pin pre-90 MK2 clocks also fit MK2 Sciroccos, which will widen your audience a bit

You won't be able to tell if they'll fit until you get the ones out of your car to view. There were two styles, single and twin plug, the double has two plugs at the bottom, one black and one white multi-pin style, whereas the single plug is just the white one. Saying that...I think I remember hearing that the single plug ones say VDO in the middle of one of the gauges, whereas the doubles say something else, maybe someone can confirm this

Yes you can, you just look where the hazard switch is, on the dash you need twin plugs, on the steering column you need single plug

VDO can be either single or twin plug as can motometer which is the other make you were looking for

Thanks for your responses and interest..... BUT... what was confusing me is that on my car the hazard switch is on the dash.... which made me think/believe the dash clocks were twin plug.... and why I bought a replacement set of clocks - which were twin plug.

Does anyone know how crucial it is to have a VAG coil as mine is an aftermarket one (Halfords?) ---- am seeking solutions (including reading other current posts) as to why the rev counter will not work.... nor the MFA display - apart from the digi clock which I can set and is fine.

if its a 91 it almost definitly should be a 90spec with single plug clocks. the hazard switch on the dash rings warning bells that someone has hacked up your wiring.  Pop the fusebox cover off and check it, compare it to the 2 fusebox pictures in the FAQ to confirm which one you have :)
