exhaust emissions warning / juddering
« on: 16 April 2009, 22:26 »
Hi all, am new on here and a first time golf owner. After wanting one for aaaages, finally parted with my beloved first car, lucy the escort!  anyways, got over it when I fell in love with my dubby (as pictured below) Unfortunately, I've ran into a couple of probs...

First, it kept getting stuck in first gear. garage said this was a common fault and renewed linkages (?) All seemed fine but it started up again a week later.

Then, on way back to Carlisle from Rochdale on motorway, exhaust emissions warning light came on, flashing. Pulled over but as it said basically it was safe to drive to garage, I did. Took it in and again they said this is common. Don't know if this is same problem but it was juddering badly, felt like it was going to stall at each gear change and sounds just awful. I have been reading bits and bobs on here and sounds similar to fuel pump problems. Although its still under warranty so won't cost anything, is it serious and can it be fixed easily?

Will be without it for a week at least cos my mechanics on holiday, typical!

Sorry for essay on first post! I will  :lipsrsealed: now!

firstly welcome    i see another mk4 silver golf  the best colour to you should get over to the mk4 section we won't bite lol anyway looking at your problems the flashing emission warning lamp and lack of power and sounding rough will almost certainly be a coilpack(s) an easy fix what engine code aum,agu ? as your car is under warranty then the garage should put it on vag-com to check for any fault codes and should fix the fault(s) is it a non franchised dealer you got your golf from? if the coilpacks are faulty then insist that genuine vw ones are fitted as replacements and they are easy to replace tbh yes this is a common mk4 prob also get them to have another look at your gear linkage again and tell them your not happy with it its there job to fix it

Check the brake light switch, heard that is a common problem on these two and brings up the emissions light.

top of the brake pedal arm.

If you do a google search for it, it will bring up multiple topics on multiple forums.

Neither do most people, and yet, strangely, it still happens.

Do a google search.

got my car back on friday (after 2 looong weeks!) It was the coil pack apparently, well done northeast for the diagnosis!  celebrated by washing it when I got down to Rochdale! Doesnt feel quite the same somehow but that might just be me being nervy!
