Hi there
           Not a Mk1 engine question but since its going in a Mk1 I figured Id ask the question here first.

           I am looking at getting some cams re-ground for an ABF engine I am putting together at the moment. The build specs are relatively straightforward with the bottom end lightened and re-balanced to a fast road spec, a basic head re-furb with the valves and seats 3 angled and it will be going in with some slightly oversize throttle bodies to give some headroom for further tuning along with megasquirt injection and ignition.

The cam profiles I am looking at are relatively tame 262/264 durations with a reasonable increase in overall lift as I am not looking to build a proper screamer engine but am looking for a solid road engine at the moment, with the potential to turn the car into a bit of a track weapon once the owner is used to it, although at that point we will do a bit more work on the head.

I have spoken to the people I am looking at getting the cams re-ground by and, since I have a set of KR and ABF cams, he has asked me to send through whichever cams have the bigger base circle (assuming they are different) and whichever set give the highest lift figures. My main question is, does anybody have good info on the lifts for both sets of cams and does anybody know if either set runs a bigger base circle than the other.

I would measure them myself but I cant get to one of the sets at the moment and I dont have access to a dti to get accurate figures from either set at the moment. I have had a good search around for this info but cannot find any conclusive info that screams that one set would be better for re-profiling over the other set so any help would be appreciated.

Mega technical question, go on to the KENT CAMS web site and type in your engine, it will give you a list of options, with all the specs of the different cams that it sells, hopefully this'll save you a lot of grief... be careful of re-griding cams, as if the base circle is ground too much on solid cam lifters, the shim can 'rock out', if you're running hydrolic, the problem is less pronounced, but you could still end up with excessive valve gap.

I know the potential problems of re-ground cams and I know roughly what cam specs im looking at using but im more interested in which set to re-grind at the moment, KR or ABF, I think Ill send the ABF ones anyway as I know he has done the new profiles for that particular engine but cheers anyway.
